Suffering (domain)
Clerics who take the Suffering domain believe in the importance of enduring pain in order to discipline their lives and bring themselves closer to the divine. Suffering clerics do not necessarily believe that all life is pain, but instead that pain is important to life. Pain teaches valuable lessons, and those who suffer should strive to find the true meaning behind why they suffer. Suffering clerics commonly engage in practices such as fasting, abstinence from alcohol, sex, and similar indulgences, and many perform bloody ceremonies where they flog or mutilate themselves or their fellow worshipers. This denial of the self opens one's mind to the gods, and Suffering clerics find transcendence in this experience. When the rituals are done, tending to wounds or partaking in previously-denied substances symbolizes a spiritual growth, a new beginning.
