You are skilled at working with languages, in both its spoken and written forms. You can speak multiple languages, and can decipher nearly any tongue given enough time. Your skill in writing allows you to create and detect forgeries as well.

Modifying ability: Intelligence

Classes: Arcane Trickster, Assassin, Bard, Dreadmaster, Eldritch Knight, Guild Thief, Harper Agent, Harper Mage, Harper Scout, Mystic Theurge, Shadowdancer, Thaumaturge

Requires training: Yes

Check: When deciphering in an unfamiliar writing in an unfamiliar language or a message written in incomplete or archaic form, DC20 to decipher simple writing, DC25 to decipher standard writing, and DC30 or higher to decipher intricate, exotic, or very old writing. A natural 1 on this check causes you to draw a false conclusion about the text, rather than simply failing to decipher it. To create or detect forgeries, you make an opposed linguistics check against whomever you are attempting to deceive or whatever you are attempting to authenticate.

Use: Automatic when attempting to decipher writing. Selected when attempting to create or detect a forgery.

Special

For every 5 ranks you have in this skill, you learn to speak and read a new language.

5 or more ranks in Linguistics gives a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks.

Server Notes

Linguistics (Intelligence). Linguistics is a combined skill governing the pnp skills of Speak Language, Forgery, and Decipher Script. Every 5 ranks invested in Linguistics grants the character one new language. There are no mechanical effects of Forgery and Decipher Script at present, but an opposed Linguistics check would be used in any DM plot involving forgery, detecting forgery, or reading ancient documents.
