Lantan as a whole is a country focused primarily in the arts and sciences, unlike that which is found in the rest of Abeir-Toril. The Gnomes of Lantan eventually hope to initiate a kind of renaissance in its scientific and mechanical achievements to finally bring about a global age of peace to all. Its greatest mechanical achievement is said to be that of flying machines. As a result, very few Lantanese gnomes ever delve into the Arcane Arts of spellcasting, but those who do will usually take up residence on the Island of Orlil.

Lantan is by far the most technologically advanced country on Faerûn. Some rare experiments with smoke powder are currently occurring, but now major breakthroughs have yet taken place.

The language Lantan is a secret tongue originating from these isles. The language is kept carefully secret to protect lantanese technology from being deciphered and copied. Academic discourse on Lantan takes place in lantanese first and common gnome second. Only materials deemed outdated or safe to share also printed in gnome.

When spoken lantanese sounds very similar to regular gnome, though listeners soon find out that they can't make sense of a single word or sentence. Written lantanese uses the normal gnomish-dwarven script, though it appears as gibberish to those who do not know the language.
