A 3-foot-long, blazing beam of moonlight springs forth from your hand. The blade itself is harmless until the wielder instructs it to prime itself for a blow, through an act of will.
Anyone who can cast moon blade can wield the beam with proficiency. However, if you are proficient with any type of sword, you can wield the beam as if it were any type of sword and thus gain the benefits of any special sword skill you might have, such as Weapon Focus.
Attacks with the moon blade are melee touch attacks. Its strike saps vitality or life force, causing no visible wounds but dealing 1d8 points of damage plus 1 point per two caster levels (to a maximum of +10) to any type of creature except undead. Undead are visibly wounded by a moon blade. Their substance boils away from its touch, and they take 2d8 points of damage plus 1 point per caster level (to a maximum of +30) per blow. The blade is immaterial, and your Strength modifier does not apply to the damage. A successful moon blade strike temporarily scrambles magic. (Spell failure 20% + total damage from the blade, for 9 seconds)
Gameplay Notes
- The damage is Positive Energy
- Only Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Focus and Epic Weapon Focus in a blade weapon will affect the Moon Blade.
- Other feats which affect melee touch attacks will probably affect the attacks as well (i.e. it has been confirmed that Epic Prowess will add +1 AB to the attack)
- Though the melee touch attack gets no damage bonus from high strength, the AB is modified for strength.
- The melee touch attack can score a critical hit on a natural 20. If the creature is immune to critical hits the damage will not be doubled and the combat log will not show "Creature immune to critical hits" (as is the case with normal weapons).
- The animated attacks with the blade do nothing and look odd in the combat log, but you can ignore them. For each of those attacks, a split second later the actual touch attacks will occur.
- The Moon Blade is lost if it is unequipped.
