To play on Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles you need the original Neverwinter Nights 2 games as well as The Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir expansions.

A very popular choice is Good Old Games which sells an NWN2 package including all expansions: GOG

If you already own Neverwinter Nights 2 but have patching issues, you can download the entire game pre-patched . You will however need to add your own serial keys to the nwncdkey.ini file. Alternatively the patches can still be manualy downloaded from the Neverwinter Vault . Autopatcher download support was stopped in 2014 by Obsidian Entertainment.

NWN2 Texture Upgrade [OPTIONAL]
These are graphical upgrades that make the game look much better. They come highly recommended for all NWN2 players and don't affect the server or multiplayer experience mechanically in any way.
Override files are normally against the server rules (rule 9) but the packages listed below are allowed and safe to use. The reason overrides are commonly forbidden in multiplayer worlds is because the player's local client would use his or her override files instead of the files the server is using. Most servers therefore take the precaution of including their own overrides in .hak files that the player automatically downloads when he or she logs in, which trump what's in the player's overrides folder.

Be warned that these updates are rather large! To install put them in your game's override folder.
Upgrade Download links:

*Better Trees,
*Better Terrain Textures,
*Better Tiles - Creatures and Items.
*Prettier Cloaks
*Prettier Floorboards

Texture upgrades are HIGHLY recommended

Connecting
Go to Multiplayer, then make a Bioware Community Forum name and password. They are case-sensitive. You don't need to Activate the account to play. [Note: The Authentication server is currently offline, so this step may be superfluous]

Now you can choose,

Use Direct Connect to 23.229.0.132, press connect and "voila" the game will connect to the server immediately. In case this doesn't work this web page lists the available NWN2 servers and their IP's: NWN List.

Alternatively if you have installed the NWN2 Client Extension you can navigate to "Join Internet game" and then to the Roleplay section on the left. Scroll down until you see Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles. It's usually pretty high on the Player tab at the top, if you click on that. Press Connect.

The server has a lot of custom content which will automatically begin to download via the NWN2 auto-downloaded that was added in the last patch. When it's done, you'll see the screen with the Create Character option.
While waiting on the auto-downloader to complete consider perusing the server rules. So you know what kind of community Baldur's Gate is. And what behavior is considered normal. The Rules.

Making a Character
Baldur's Gate is a roleplaying server. There are some useful hints on making a fun and setting consistent roleplaying character here.

If you post or submit your biography to a dungeon master you can also earn an experience starter award of 2000 experience to help you on your way. You can read about this reward program Here

Just a couple of tips to get you started: It's very helpful to get an idea of a character and his story around him, then actually create him, rather than making him first then trying to fit a story around him.You don't need to come up with the strongest, fastest and most-damage-dealing character possible to have a good time on Baldur's Gate.
At first it is not a bad idea to start with one of the more common races such as Human, half elf, (tolerant) Elf, Dwarf or Halfling, rather than e.g. Drow or Half-Orc or Tieflings. These more unusual races tend to have a lot of associated lore with them.
Similarly, pick a fairly easy starter class or combination of classes such as Fighter for your first character.

Baldur's Gate has quite a few extra classes from the standard NWN2 classes. Some of them you can only take after taking a few levels such as Fighter or Mage or Cleric. You may want to look at them and plan out your character. ( if you wish, you can play with the character's build on a character build module. One is NWN2DB and another is Jeg's BGTSCC training module, found Here (Jegg's) . Download it into your NWN2 folder under the Modules folder and unpack it. None of these sites are perfectly accurate now). You can ask questions to the guru's in the Character Building part of the community forum.

: 1. Please choose an appropriate name for the setting, not something like "Beyonce" or "Obama"! Also, please avoid calling yourself Lord or any other title without discussing it with the DMs first and certainly stay away from cannon characters names like "Drizzt".

: 2. Please do not pick the the Minotaur head appearance in the Half Orc options in character creation. It is against our rules.

: 3. The maximum character level level is 30 and you can have up to 4 classes, three of them prestige.

: 4. You need to have at least 3 levels of ALL your classes by 20th level. This means you may not take a new class after the 18th level or you will be in violation of this rule.

: 5. Baldur's Gate is a Roleplaying server. You are expected to stay in character whenever possible. Please also make sure that your character's class makeup (build) makes sense in roleplay terms. For example don't mix opposing classes such as Paladin / Dread Pirate unless it makes real good sense. Also don't forget to roleplay your character's classes as a whole person, rather than four separate classes. Roleplay includes a character's, ability scores and skills as well as the deity he or she follows. If you're a mage whose strength is in their brains not their muscles, you shouldn't be able to run around with a big tower shield equipped, pretending to be a soldier.

: 6. There are a couple of extra guidelines to do with Gods for Clerics and Stormlords. Please check out the Deity section of this wiki and the forum here: About Deities.

: 7. Remember: Roleplay what's on your character sheet, for anything more you'll need Dungeon Master permission. Other players may consider your character insane if he says he's a dragon or demon while clearly being an elf for example.

When you've made your character, the last step will automatically take you into the world. Have fun!
Useful Tips
*You can Rest at the campfires which are outdoors.

*At the bottom left hand of the screen is an Eye icon. Through this there are several options. One of the most useful is the Player Chat at the bottom. Use this to send /tells to other players by clicking on their names.

*Pressing P brings up a list of other players and their log in names.

*The Auction can be a great source of bargains or a way to earn gold.

*Sometimes loot drops that is worthless. Please don't leave it lying as it lags the server. Drop it in the trash barrel in the General Merchant's. If you prefer, you can build a fire through PC tools ( see below ), drop the useless things in and then Remove it.

*PC tools - right click on your character. Among other things, at the bottom is PC tools. You can Save your character through this, find a lot of emotes and build ( and remove ) campfires for roleplay or for loot-disposal.

Skywing Client Extension
This is an excellent tool that really sharpens up the interface and solves MANY bugs and crashes you might experience. Find it here.

Skywing's Extender is HIGHLY recommended.

The Game Itself
*How to speak in-game? Hit the "Enter" button, type your message and hit "Enter" again. Done. All what you typed in will be shown over your head and everyone around you can read it. Important: Everything you say that way will be treated as if your character actually said that in direct speech in-game so make sure it is in-game (in character - "IC") indeed. If there is the need for any messages that are out of character ("ooc") you should make that clear by typing /// or (( at first. If you want to express feelings ("looks totally surprised") or actions ("stands up and walks away") players usually use * at the start and the end of the message, like: *stands up and walk away*

*There are other situations though where you don't want to hear anyone around to hear what you say. So how to whisper or to ask a DM about something?

*When you log in after the character creation you will notice your two text boxes on the left side. As usual the upper is the combat log the lower the chat log. On the left side of the chat log you find 5 button, which - when checked - have the following influence on how you say something (from top to bottom):
**[L] you just talk normally and all around you (in a certain radius) can read/"hear" it. The text appears white above your head and in the chat-log.
**[W] you whisper. Only those close to you will hear that and it will not show up above your head but in the chat-log.
**[P] you speak to all those who are in your group. The text will appear in white above your head (but is visible only to group members) and in the chat-log. Your group members will even be able to read that when you are on another map.
**[D] You write to the DM's that are on. You get no message in chat-log or above your head once you fired the message and only Dungeon Masters will be able to read it.
**[S] You shout and everyone on the whole server - regardless where they may be - can read that. This channel is disabled for regular players and can only be used by staff and dungeon masters.

*And what if you want to say something to one certain person in particular? (This is the best possibility for out of character (ooc) talk since you won't disturb anyone else on the server.) Open your Options menu and click on "Party chat" (near bottom). A window will appear that shows you every character (character, not player) that is logged in at the moment. Left-click on the char whose player you want to write, you will be able to type in your "tell" now in the chat window. Hit enter, ready. The other possibility is to open the Options menu again, click on Player list and have a look at a list of all players and their characters that are online at the moment. That is useful when you know the player but not the character. Use the method above as soon as you know the actual character name.

*If you received a tell (Green text) by someone and just wanted to answer, you can even right-click on the name in the chat window and choose "write private tell" (or similar, this text doesn't appear in English in my game) to write a private message: Be careful there though, sometimes the game sets a space between the last letter of the name and the "" that are always around it. In this case you have to remove that space since the game won't find the player otherwise. Example. The char you want to write is named Charraj. If you see "Charraj" all is fine, do you see "Charraj", you have to remove the space after the s.

*This tell function works with dunegon masters too. There are for sure much much more things you possibly want/need to know but with the ability to actually write ingame you should be able to deal with that ingame too.

The game itself - how to get started character-wise?
Once you have finished the character creation and start the game you will first come to the starting area also known as the nexus. All you say here will be treated as out of character (ooc) so no need for starting a sentence with /// or ((.

Usually a new character will be prompted by the DMFI Language tools to select a language your character can speak and understand. These languages are spoken by creatures and players in the game and you need to have them in order to understand what is said or say anything in them. The amount of languages you understand depends upon your character's Intellgience ability score.

Look around a bit, read the signs, a lot of useful information can be found here. The key that highlights objects in your original NWN2 works online too, by default this is "Z". It can be very helpful. You will find several NPCs here that you can talk to and that can help you finalize or tweak your character. The RCR NPC allows you to store experience from a character and delete him. The Experience can then be reclaimed by a new character that hasn't earned any XP yet. You can read more about it here: RCR's.

You also find a description changer (in case you want to change your "biography" from the char creation), a character deleter and a deity changer here. The Biography editor can also be accessed from the player menu bar at the top of your screen. This menu bar also has several options for flavor text coloror (/ and * are colored) as well as having your character do an emote automatically when you write something like *waves*. (Your character will wave at the target you have selected)
Assuming your character knows a language besides "common" you will also be able to select a language to speak here. That will open a custom chat bar which will translate your text line into the chosen language after pressing enter.

Finally, if you right click and hold with your mouse a context menu will appear. This menu will usually contain the option called "PC Tools" at the bottom. These tools are a roleplaying asset that allow your character to use roleplay aids. You can familiarize yourself with it as you play. They can make your character lay down for example, or dance for a long duration.
Entering Baldur's Gate or S'shamath for the first time:
If you think you have done everything needed before entering the actual game you can talk to Mystra and she will send you on your way to the Sword Coast.

For underdark characters it is highly recommended to read this topic so you have a basic understanding of the setting. S'shamath is not your typical Drow City because Wizards rule here, not matrons! See this Lore Topic

If you are a surface character it also a good idea to read up on the setting and your racial history. The Lore section of the forum is always a good place to start: BGTSCC Lore Section

Depending on your character's race and choice you will end up in either Baldur's Gate or S'shamath or an Orc Encampment. What your character does from this point is completely up to him or her but it is recommended to start by doing some basic quests and meeting other players. As you play you will learn new things and likely participate in dungeon master led events. It is possible to talk with DM's and ask them to throw some events for your character but you may also wander into them by pure chance. The Baldur's Gate graveyard and Underdark Beetle cave are the easiest respective starter areas after you've done the introductory quests.

Buying proper equipment is very important if you decide to venture out into the world to adventure! Make sure to upgrade your gear as you gain experience!
Enjoy the game! Happy roleplaying!
Because games are all about having fun!

As with any adventure your character's time among the living will eventually draw to a close and he will die or depart this world in some other manner. During your time on the Sword Coast it is likely you will meet Myrkul - the god of Death - more than once in the Fugue plane. You pay an experience cost of 100 per character-level to be resurrected to the land of the living.

This cost does not decrease your level even if it is greater than the amount of experience you've earned. It also does not remain as an experience debt.

If you've died:
If your character has died he cannot recall anything that happened in the fugue or his encounter with Myrkul, or any players there. Sending in character tells from the fugue plane is also frowned upon as meta-gaming. In the event that your character met his demise at the hands of another player in a PvP situation the no-memory rule extends further than the stay in the Fugue. It means that your character cannot recall or remember how he died and what immediate events led up to his death.

Permanent Death:
Baldur's Gate does not have forced permanent death for characters. Dungeon Masters will never pursue such a thing unless a player consents. In that case it may be possible for the Dungeon Masters to organize some events leading to the character's permanent demise / retirement. At this point you can then delete the retired character via the RCR NPC in the nexus.
The continuous-campaign timeline started in the year 1344 (DR) and has advanced at a pace equal to real time.

The campaign timeline is written largely from the perspective of the Duchal Court in Baldur's Gate City. It documents the goings-on on the Sword Coast, historical events, and achievements of various sorts. For example the events of the Amn - Baldur's Gate war in 1347 DR, during which Beregost became an Amnian protectorate. Adventurer friends and allies of the Lathanderite temple gather for a ritual ceremony to give thanks for a new-beginning. The future of Beregost remains unclear, with Amn's governess outed, and the town considered a financial sink-hole, the Temple of Lathander has gradually re-asserted itself as the ruling power. Sheriff de Oca is now the highest ranking Amnian authority in the town, and is in charge of Amn's weakened garrison. Better times appear on the horizon for crisis stricken Beregost.

1350 DR (2014) - Year of the Morningstar
* A mercenary company known as the Silver Shield is founded seeking work among the southern Sword Coast and Northern Amn.

* The infamous pirate Kalma Hellstorm was known to be in great wroth as a result of the last years raid on Roaringshore. For several weeks afterwards he prowled northern Amn, swearing and exacting vengeance on Baldur's Gate and its allies who conducted the raid. After a brief reign of terror, the pirate was subdued by the Radiant Heart and brought to the Flaming Fist at Baldur's Gate for justice.

* The year started off with a large number of uncharacteristic drow raids in the northern territories, culminating with a murderous assaults upon the fishing village of Ulgoth's Beard, and the town of Hills Edge which killed many and destroyed considerable property. Several Adventurers and authorities were mustered to combat the drow menace, and persecution of the vile denizens of the Underdark commenced with a renewed fervor. Rumors as to the sudden attacks ranged from theories of migrating newcomers to this corner of the underdark raiding the surface for slaves to Zhentarim plotting stirring the hornets nest deep beneath the Northern Sword Coast.

* A party of surfacers travels to the Underdark city of S'shamath to attempt to negotiate the release of a prisoner with the exchange of stolen artifacts but are too late to stop numerous raids being levied against the surface. Later several drow appear on the surface in the company of the Paladin Ronin. They bring several sickly slaves as a token of ‘friendship.’ Several adventurers and the faithful of Ilmater nurse the former slaves to health, and the paladin is held to Trial for endangering Baldur’s Gate and sympathizing with drow. During sentencing, the Paladins’ drow lover Nessa appears and chastises the Duke’s for their foolishness. The drow is executed and the paladin branded an exile, to serve as an example of the extents of drow corruption and the perils which befall any drow sympathizers.

* In the Far Hills, near the Sunset Mountains of the Western Heartlands Darkhold, or Castle Darkhold - and its Zhentarim occupants - publicly proclaim to serve and protect the Far Hills, harbor trade caravans in need of re-supply, and facilitate diplomatic relations between the Inner Sea and the Sword Coast. Several Radiant Heart are captured in the lawless northern territories and accused of seditious acts against the Zhentarim. They are executed at Darkhold, under accusations of sedition and espionage on behalf of the Harpers. The following weeks see a tirade of accusations slung across the sword coast accusing and denouncing several prominent adventurers as Zhentarim or Harper agents.

* In a scandalous controversy, a prelate, Elphias Valkerion, of the Radiant Heart is discovered by his squire to be non other than the a Dreadlord of the Zhentarim in disguise. The order reals from the reality of how they allowed their enemy so deep into their own house. Following the Prelates expulsion, and with much soul searching, the order seeks to rebuild with greater fervor. Shortly after, missives sent by the Radiant Heart calling upon the Lords Alliance for a unified campaign against the Zhentarim in Darkhold lead to anti-Zhentarim demonstrations in the towns of Elturel and Scornubel. While sentiments in support of such actions grow among the border towns feeling the shadow of Darkhold cast upon them, sentiment among the larger powers - further west and largely untouched by recent conflicts - call for temperance, patience, and unity. Meanwhile, Zhentarim machinations and patronage towards the town of Corm Orp seem to quietly muffle any hints of dissent or resistance to Zhentarim encroachments. Darkhold benefits greatly from the bounty of the halflings' fields as the cold winter descends upon the Sunset Mountains. The end of the year saw a high level, very public, and heavily questioned defection in the former Zhentarim Mage Telia Navra to the Lords Alliance via Baldur's Gate.

* Mysterious fires and the appearance of fire salamanders, efreeti, and fire elementals befalls a remote section of the sunset mountains in late Fall. Caravans traveling too close to the region report a great black dragon sighted in the nearby skies. Rangers and druids of the elder circle spend weeks scouting the area. Rumors around tavern circles spin tales of adventurers aiding them having traveled to the elemental plane of fire, and even the fabled efreeti City of Brass in efforts to quell the flames. While fires continue to erupt among the area, they appear to at least have been contained within it.

* Restoration efforts are conducted throughout the year to cleanse and restore the desolate town of Triel. Druids, Chanteans, Ilmatari, Greyfox tribesmen, and other interested parties labor to cleanse the undead presence and heal the blighted lands. While undead continue to appear and evidence of the blight remains, there are optimistic hopes that further efforts may leave the land tenable for resettlement in the future.

* The Greyfox tribe faced off against the forces of a Wild Hunt with aide of remnants of other Tribes of the High Moor. In the summer of 1350, the Greyfox moved north near Secomber to lead the re-unification of the various tribal remnants who survived the Dark Horde.

* At Candlekeep, a sailing expedition initiated in 1349 DR resumed sailing west from their Mazticia base camp. The exploration proceeded westward eventually reaching Kara-Tur around Uktar.

* Gullykin continues as an active hub for adventurers looking for profitable employment scouting and looting in the nearby crypts and Durlag's Tower, the Gullykin mayor helping to organize and finance multiple expeditions of adventurers into these dangerous areas, with some such adventures ending pleasantly and others tragically or contentiously.

* Helmites from Amn and Baldur's Gate come to the aid of the village of Farhill as it is extorted and besieged by a group of ogres lead by an ogre magi. The ogre leader's forces are defeated after the Battle of Farhill, while he himself was slain in his lair along with his devilish allies. In the course of their campaign, the Helmites also smashed a bandit cartel and brought the leader to justice in Baldur's Gate.

* In the spring, a small but widespread series of crop blights and mysterious deaths were observed across the Sword Coast. These were linked by some to moving, hungry shadows. The cause of these occurrences remains poorly understood.

* Beregost's ever-increasing lawlessness forces the local Amnian governess, Isabella Beninio, to enact martial law and put the law-enforcement into the hands of the local Amnian military commander, Antonio de Coibra. With the use of rather unorthodox (and rough) methods, as well as the help of the temple of Lathander and other adventurers, the town's order is slowly restored, and the illegal activities crushed one by one.

* The capture and execution of the (in)famous Red Sorceress, leader of the notorious organization of assassins called The Dead Crows, is reputed to have dealt the final blow to Beregost's criminal underworld. By now, Beregost is slowly returning to its pre-war tranquil, law-abiding state. The region is long lulled into a sense of confidence, until the order re-emerges under new leadership with a sudden brazen attack on the local Amnian Guard.

* Construction of a Watchtower in the Cloudpeaks in northern Amn begins at the behest of an adventuress who had recently married into Amnian nobility. This generates a backlash from the Duke’s of Baldur’s Gate amid accusations that Amn was seeking a greater military foothold along the border. Tensions flared, and some among the nobility feared renewed hostilities between Baldur’s Gate and Amn. The Everwatch Knights returned from Athkalta with authority from the coin lords to assist local officials in diplomacy with Baldur’s Gate to quell the matter. In coordination with several local factions and the local authorities, the following months see numerous initiatives for the restoration of Commerce and Stability in Northern Amn. While the region enjoys a resurgence not known since long before the Amn-Gate war, the early workings of the Watchtower lay abandoned.

* A committee is formed in Baldur’s Gate by several interested parties in restoring prominence to the sword coast and northern Amn. At one of their early meetings and faux paus at the Duchal Court with the Dwarves of Kraak Helzaak leads to a rise of tensions between the Duke’s of Baldur’s Gate and the Dwarves of Kraak Helzaak. The Duke’s demand an apology, as the dwarves accuse them of manufacturing excuses to ignore past debts.

* The Dwarves of Kraak Helzaak meanwhile, focus on developing the mines around their recently founded stronghold. Their digging seems to have breached into a section of the upperdark, where their miners encounter dangers common to such regions. Parties of Warriors are mustered to venture into the tunnels and push back any threats to the miners as the dwarves seek to secure their claims.

* Talespinners in salty taverns in fishing villages up and down the Sword Coast had frightened patrons with tales of sightings of a Ghost Ship off the coast on foggy nights, but these rumors cease when a party of adventures lead by a renowned gnome treasure hunter supposedly end the curse of the ghost ship. An ancient sword is recovered in the process of purging the vessel of its undead curse and is placed in the protection of the church of Helm."

* Late in the year, conflicts begin brewing in the north among followers of several of the Deities of Fury. Rumors begin to spread among the adventuring communities that these cults appear to be seeking ancient artifacts of from the Netherese era among the High Moor. Such rumors draw in several prominent and opposing factions of the realm, and the regions criminal underworld, into a game of intrigue as the hunt begins to track down these artifacts and learn their purpose, or at least why they have sparked such turmoil among the followers of the Deities of Fury. As the game unfolds, several artifacts change hands among the players. An ancient Jergalite tome from the Netherese era, when the faith was at its height, towering above others. Sventar, a sentient blade filled with ancient secrets, slow to reveal them in search of a worthy wielder. A powerful ring with a gem so grant it is said to enthrall any who gaze upon it, found among the Illithid, whose power must have been augmented greatly with such a trinket. An ancient dagger, the tooth of Jergal, revered among the faithful and rumored to be respected and feared by all the gods. Great storms ravage the Northern Sword Coast as The cult of Rust and the Worm, faithful of Talos, begin to find victories and grow in prominence among this great game. It is rumored that they obtained all the artifacts, and sought to conduct an ancient ritual gathering them together at an ancient Netherese place of power. Several adventurers are rumored to have tracked them to final apex. Only they would know what transpired therein.

THE UNDERDARK:
* Political intrigue was rife in the city of Dark Weavings. A new house, Qu'ellar Dev'lin establishes their presence and ambitions among the population of S'shamath.

* There was new Eye of the 7th Circle for a period, in one masked female wizard who replace Valshar the Phantom Wizard. Following the Shadowmistress's disappearance a few months later, Valshar had once again taken up the position.

* With an uncharacteristic show of charity, the Conclave saw fit to pardon the Eilistraeeans deemed guilty of opening a portal into the abyss, over the altar of lolth the year before. Placed under a measure of protection by the conclave and granted citizenship again, this act seems to be more a political power play than anything else.

* Later in the year, a festival dedicated to the worship of Lolth, arranged by Bel'iira Sshamath went horribly wrong, as several of the sacrifices, including an old traitor of Sshamath, turned into Illithids, before all to see. Wild rumors speculate on what followed the scandal.

1349 DR (2013) - Year of the Bridle
* The Harpers succeed in breaking the Rundeen trade monopoly in Chult and disrupting their activities in Calimshan after slaying three Rundeen leaders and nearly fifty lesser agents.

* The Puissant Department of Joyful Rediscovery in Shou Lung charges the Ko family with the task of turning Akari Island into a maritime colony and forward base for his Magnificent and Just Majesty’s Fleet.

* The civil war in Tethyr continues, creating a power vacuum in the nation filled by various aspiring nobles and warlords. The warlords fight each other and assert what control they can over the territory hold. The common folk suffer.

* The Black Orc conflict takes place. A migrating band of exceptionally strong and healthy mountain Orcs begins moving towards the Sharpteeth Woods. Zhentarim involvement is suspected once the Orc horde nears the Elven settlement of Doron Amar.

* The third Siege of Doron Amar occurs. The Black Orc horde is finally driven off, toward the North. Later that year Triel is occupied by the savage Black Orcs.

* The "Battle of the three Pennants" takes place in occupied Triel. A Zhentarim-mercenary force laid siege to the town occupied by the Black Orc horde. An allied and partly Elven force from the South arrives, causing a three way conflict as each of the involved parties seeks to create an advantage. The Zhentarim-mercenary force resists an all-out attack by the new arrivals and succesfully conquers Triel. The Black Orc menace is left scattered and in tatters throughout the North. Although technically no pennants were used save by the mercenary forces, bards and chroniclers telling of the battle gloss over this detail. Most historians and commoners now believe each side in the battle to have fought under their own pennant. In truth the three pennants refer to the three Zhentarim employed mercenary companies, each desperately defending their own pennant from an attack on two sides.

* A sizeable Black Orc population remains scattered throughout the North.
* Later in the year, strange magical and seemingly incurable plague affects the northern towns of Soubar and Triel. Hundreds of people die to the plague; attempts at curing it are ultimately futile as a small orcish band lead by a plaguebearer of the orcish god Yurtrus attacks Triel and Soubar. Whilst Soubar barely survives thanks to the actions of the Order of the Silver Rose, some scholars of Candlekeep, and emissaries of the Greyfox Tribe, Triel is almost completely leveled by a surprise attack, most of its population slaughtered by plague zombies, earthquakes and fire storms. Triel is literally erased from the maps as a town inhabited by the livings, its ruined and smoldering buildings now host to the restless dead.

* Amid the tribulations in the north, Zhentarim forces cement their hold on the recently reclaimed Darkhold. Military forces entrench and many fear ambitious plots brewing in the mountain Keep's towers.

* In Baldur's Gate several prominent courtiers of the realm have suggested founding and sponsoring an organization of Rangers for the northern frontier. These rangers would report on future menaces from the North and secure the tradeways. The strong Zhentarim presence in Darkhold apparantly dissuades the Dukes from supporting such an initiative.

* Both Amn and Baldur's Gate gradually reduce their military presence along their shared border. The Council of Six in Amn is directing the Legion's attention towards containing the spread of the Tethyrian Civil War to Amnish territory. The Golden Legion begins to shift its focus towards Southern Amn and oceanic exploration. The Dukes of Baldurs Gate begin concentrating the Flaming Fist to the North East of the City, checking Zhentarim influence over the tradeways.

* The Amnish protectorate of Beregost becomes increasingly lawless. Reduced trade and lingering damage to commerce from the Amn-Gate war send the town into a steep recession. Many Amnish immigrants begin to leave, seeking better commercial oppertunities elsewhere now that the Golden Legion is shfiting its focus.

* Nashkel becomes an inhospitable town. Strangers are turned away or greeted with predictions of doom. Rumours of acts of vile madness spread. The Church of Helm in Athkathla dispatches a duo of Witch Slayers to investigate, they mysteriously dissapear and are not seen again. Amn takes no further action, considering the northern border a low priority in view of the carnage the Tethyrian Civil War causes to the South.

* Months of ever more mysterious, chaotic, and unexplained events raise tensions among the populous of Nashkel. A large number of citizens fall prey to what can only be described as madness. Adventurers speak of various encounters with demonic elements. Witnesses recount demonic sightings and and unholy events in whispers. The people, in fear and desperation even turn their suspicions upon their Helmite protectors. Eventually tensions culminate in what became known as the Nashkel Riots.

* Problems in Nashkel seem to cease almost suddenly. Several elves are rumored to have been conducting events in secret related to the town prior to its turn of fortunes. Faithful speak of climactic events, so going so far as to claim the appearance of the Avatar of Helm, come to protect the town from some great evil. Adventurers with alliances to the elves of Doron Amar are occasionally heard reminiscing upon the time, speaking of some beings called "Obyriths" in hushed tones.

* Farmers in the southern farmlands of Baldur's Gate complain of dark rituals in the night startling the livestock. Late night travelers tell of shadowy apparitions, and even attacks at night. City magistrates surmise the cause of these reports is troublesome local youths. Investigations lead to concerns among the nobles of a cult of Shar having taken root in and around Baldur's Gate.

* Several grizzly murders have taken place around the docks and even the palace district. Some have been mid-profile merchants, most having recently acquired their fortunes. The Flaming Fist hang a 'Zhentarim spy' and pin the murders on him... though a few have occurred since his death... Whispers of a serial killer are occasionally heard among noble circles.

* The honorable Knights of the Silver Rose succesfully escort a Waterdhavian dignitary to Baldur's Gate, despite repeated attempts on her life carried out by, people murmurs, sharran agents. Said dignitary, a Countess owning a large mercantile company, succesfully establishes a branch of her company inside the city, improving the precarious trade of the Duchy.

* Well-connected individuals and adventurers whisper of Sharran cultists trying to infiltrate the Duchy. Actual evidence corroborating these whispers is extremely lacking, though.

* Tarl Desenaea, Sharl Desenaea and Ren o' the Blade -The heroes of Phlan- are rumored to have been seen making their way up The Sword Coast. Tarl Desenaea, Sharl Desenaea and Ren o' the Blade. They were rumored to have spent some time among the Radiant Heart before continuing by sea to Waterdeep.

* A contemplative lich - Herbert North - rouses the ire of several religious factions with his public experiments and musings on necromancy.

* A small armada of war galleons was seen suddenly being loaded up with Flaming Fist mercenaries and leaving port in the late evening. They sailed north towards the well known pirate alcove of Roaringshore. Several of the swifter and better prepared captains were able to hoist their sails and leave port with ships designed to outrun such large and cumbersome war galleons. The slower and more rum addled soon found themselves pinned by the blockade. The late year purge of the pirate town generates a substantial moral boost for Baldur's Gate.

THE UNDERDARK:
* Shurr Silverblade and the Baleful Maw become an outlaw organization in S'shamath after Shur kills a Conclave Emmisary. Rumoured to have been dominated by a corrupted Moon Blade, Shurr is exiled by the Conclave. His life spared only for his service to the City during the Illithilich conflict. The Maw's assets are stripped, used to reimburse the house of the deceased and otherwise flowing into the City's treasury.

* In S'shamath restoration efforts continue in the wake of the Illithilich conflict. The 7th Circle has propposed and sponsored a system of Ward Spires (Vharr Latyema) to be placed throughout the City's domains. Several prototypes have been constructed for the Conclave. Several mysterious attacks occur within S'shamath, directed against Conclave seat holder Ilphryssin Arkentlar, the 7th Circle's Chapter Master. The Charnag Maelhra begins an extensive man-hunt for treacherous elements within the City. All attacks occur during citizenry councils on the merits of the Vharr Latyema undertaking.

* The joint S'shamathian schools of Necromancy, Evocation, Divination, Conjuration and Enchantment pledge their support and expertise to the Vharr Latyema undertaking. Prototype spires become more advanced and are finally brought into mass production. An economic boom occurs among the City's arteficers as orders for the undertaking are placed.

* The Temple of Lolth is raided by unknown forces. The acting priestesses at the time go into self-imposed exile to minimize the Temple's loss of face in S'shamath's politics. This class is not available at character creation and must be unlocked by meeting special requirements, listed below. This class has 29 available levels.

You become a Long Death monk by using the 'Monk Prestige Classes' feat all monk characters get at level 1. Through the conversation that opens you may select progression in an available prestige class whenever you level-up as a monk. You can also disable further progression in a prestige class through this menu.
Long Death Monk substitution levels do not progress the monk flurry and ki-fist feats.
Description
Scattered across Faerûn, the monks of the long death are members of a macabre, secretive order of scholars seeking to understand the true nature of death.

They do not care about the soul or the afterlife—only about the actual process of death, specifically its effects on living tissue. Their organization is strongest in Thay, but outposts are scattered throughout Faerûn, even in the Silver Marches.

Monks make up the majority of the candidates for this prestige class, but clerics of the dark gods of death (such as Kiaransalee and Myrkul) are fairly common as well. Necromancers, assassins, and other characters who are fascinated with death round out the order’s numbers.

The candidate is inducted into the monks of the long death via a secret ceremony consisting of various morbid and hideous acts designed to test his resolve.

The capacity of an item to hold enchantments is determined by the magic it contains. An item becomes magical by imbuing it with magic, which allows it to power a limited amount of permanent enchantments. A normal magical item contains 12 enchantment slots which may be divided among different enchantments. More powerful forms of imbuing result in items that support a larger amount of enchantments.

Many enchantments cost more a single slot, the cost depending on its potency and difficulty. The Difficulty Class (DC) to place an enchantment is always rolled versus the caster's spellcraft skill + d20. To enchant certain items it is also necessary to have the appropriate feats, such as Craft Magical Arms & Armor or Craft Wondrous Items. If the caster does not possess those feats the DC check will indicate it is impossible to succeed.
You invoke the holy words quickly and your weapon flashes a holy or unholy radiance. Through Divinely granted insight you know that your following attacks will hit their mark. The target must perform a wisdom adjusted saving throw against the spell's save DC + 2. The target's wisdom modifier is subtracted from the total DC (negative modifiers are added). If the target succeeds his will-save nothing happens. If the will save fails then you shall land critical blows. You can cast this spell even when it's not your round; However, your must mind interrupting your own attacks.
This powerful spell is used to defend a stronghold. When the caster begins the process of weaving wards, by targeting himself as the spell's focal point, he becomes the Spell Warden and owner of the weaving process. Other casters may provide aid by casting Guards & Wards onto the Warden. Completely weaving wards takes a total of one hundred castings, at a cost of five thousand gold pieces each cast. The weaving process must be completed within a nine hour period, or dissipates (attempts last until server reset).

The Guards & Wards are semi-permanent and decay over a period of four months. At the end of that period they dissipate. Through the 'Designated Spell Warden' spell a Warden can restore the wards to prevent their dissolution, may attach or remove twenty specific spells, set passwords or pass-keys, and more. A Warden can transfer his position to another member regardless of whether or not that creature is capable of maintaining the wards. A proxy may also be specified: an individual which will be treated as if he or she were the Warden.
When you cast this spell the target will appear to fire a hail of arrows at any target it attacks with a bow or crossbow. The additional arrows are illusory figments and will miss, though the target does not know that.

A target who succeeds on his will savingthrow, or who has true seeing or blind-sight active, is unaffected. Affected targets suffer an armor class penalty of 1 point for every 5 casterlevels, limited to -5 AC, as they attempt to dodge the hail of arrows.
You contact your deity - or agents thereof- and ask short questions that can be answered by a simple 'yes' or 'no'. You must keep your questions short, two brief sentences of seven words, or less. The Deity will respond if it wishes to. Usually no questions are answered, but the deity or its agents almost always acknowledge the communion.

The answers given are correct within the limits of the entity's knowledge. "Unclear" is a possible answer, because powerful beings of the Outer Planes are not necessarily omniscient. In cases where a one-word answer would be misleading or contrary to the deity's interests a short phrase can be answered instead.

The spell, at best, provides information to aid character decisions. The entities contacted structure their answers to further their own purposes. If you lag, discuss the answers, or go off to do anything else, the spell ends.
This spell is cast upon a masterwork arrow or bolt, causing it to envelop 1d4+1 identical masterwork arrows or bolts from your inventory. While in mid-flight the arrow splits into separate arrows again, the new arrows appear sequentially in your hands, aimed and ready to be loosed. All the missiles attack the same target, and you must make a separate attack roll for each missile. The arrow or bolt must be fired during the same round the spell is cast, or the magic dissipates and is lost. The projectile is destroyed even if it misses its target.
This spell is cast upon a masterwork arrow or bolt, transforming it into pure black shadow. A shadow arrow deals 1d4 points of Strength (G,A) damage. The arrow or bolt must be fired during the same round the spell is cast, or the magic dissipates and is lost. The projectile is destroyed even if it misses its target.

Gameplay Notes
Although it isn't mentioned in the description the strength damage always applies when the target's spell resistance is overcome. The duration depends on the result of the target's fortitude saving throw. Strength is decreased by 1d4 for an entire minute if the save fails, for three rounds if the save succeeded, and it is not affected if the target was immune. The savingthrow is fortitude vs spells.

While on the plane of mirrors you find yourself in a maze consisting entirely of mirrors, the walls, the floors, and the ceilings. You will always pass through the maze successfully to the targeted mirror, but using a mirror walk spell is not without danger.

When you travel to a Plane of Mirrors, you create a mirror-self that will try to slay you and escape through the mirror to take over your life. You may or may not encounter a mirror self during your travels.
The spell provides a good boost, enough to possibly be undetected by many creatures who do not use spot, even if the actual base hide skill of the caster is really low.

However, it is a utility spell. Unless you have Hide in plain sight you do not have many ways to make use of hide more than once, to gain an advantage in combat. Using it to bypass encounters and monsters can be a good idea.
This spell is cast upon a masterwork arrow or bolt, transforming its head into blue ice. In addition to taking normal damage from the missile, the target takes 2d6 points of cold damage and is paralyzed. A successful Fortitude save negates the paralysis, and the target can make a new save each round (at the start of the caster's turn).
This spell is cast upon a masterwork arrow or bolt, engulfing its head in black fire. The arrow deals normal damage and wreaths the target in black flame that deals an extra 2d6 points of damage. The black flames continue to engulf the victim for 2 more rounds, dealing 2d6 points of damage each subsequent round (at the start of your turn), and they cannot be extinguished (although they can be dispelled). The arrow or bolt must be fired during the same round the spell is cast, or the magic dissipates and is lost. Creatures with immunity or resistance to fire take full damage from the black flames. The character wins the loyalty of an animal, provided that the character's heart is true. The spell functions only if the character actually wishes to be the animal's friend. If the character is not willing to treat the animal as a friend (for example, the character intends to eat it, or to use it to set off traps), the spell fails. An animal's loyalty, once gained, is natural (not magical) and lasting.

The character can teach the befriended animal three specific tricks or tasks for each point of Intelligence it possesses. Typical tasks are coming when called, rolling over on command, fetching, or shaking hands. They cannot be complex (complex tricks, such as accepting a rider, require the Handle Animal skill).
The amount received varies from 8 to 30 experience points, and there is a limit of 1250 points per reset. The limit is in place to detect and prevent malicious players from using a spamming cheat to instantly level-up through roleplay experience.

Future refinements:
In the future it is speculated the staff will look at making certain locations give double or more than usual amounts of experience per award or to increase the limit to 2000. The limit may even be removed entirely. The idea applies to Tavern roleplay for example.

Rasael:

The reading & writing system allows you to open a 'writable book' causing the picture of a real opened book to pop-up. This picture contains the text of the book item, properly outlined on the pages.

Writing:
It is also possible to write books, this is accomplished by acquiring an unlocked book and opening it. When you right click on the book a new window will pop up allowing you to start editing, or to select some other options.

Writing is very straightforward. The editing system does not require you to memorize any commands to mark-up the text manually, such as bolding, underlining, and others. One command is crucial however:
*<page:1>
Typing the command above indicates that the following text is to be put on page 1 of the book. A page command must be put at the start of every new page. The reading system will then format the book automatically. Followup commands increment logically:
*<page:2>
*<page:3>
*etc...
It is also important to remember that the commands must be in lower casing, and may not contain any spaces. Do not forget the " : " after "page" and before "1", it can be easy to miss in the example commands the system provides.

The writable books and libraries have a character limit of 10.000. If you go over this limit the exceeding portion will not be saved and is permanently lost. There is an option available to count the amount of characters in a work.

Writing in other languages,
In addition to writing in common there is the command <language:> command which marks your text as being written in a certain langauge. For example: <language:elven>The text after this command will be written in the specified language. If you want to stop using a language use the command: <language:common>. There is no fixed amount of languages that can be used per page, though your character can only write in languages he knows.

If a reader does not know the language on the page that part of the text will appear as language appropriate gibberish to him.

Storing works in Libraries:
At several location around the Sword Coast libraries can be found. The librarians in these places will allow you to browse their local selection of books, add new ones or remove works you already added.

In essence the Libraries, Readable books and Writing of books functions like an in-game Wikipedia.

The fishing system is NOT intended to be a perfect replica of fishing in the real world. It is supposed to approximate fishing in an enjoyable manner. A player could spend 10 minutes here or there fishing, or could spend hours on end. However, a character won't be able to reap huge rewards in experience or gold even if he / she spends weeks on end fishing. The Sword Coast economy doesn't revolve around adventurer-fishermen.

Features:
*Freshwater and saltwater fishing available.
*24 fish types to be caught -- 12 freshwater and 12 saltwater.
*Environmental conditions, player qualities and fishing location can affect the catch chance and outcome.
*Small XP awards for catching a rare fish.
*Chance of catching a "prized" specimen (larger than usual).
*Custom special effect for the cast, custom icons, custom equippable fishing rod.
*Variable cast times and cast locations.
*Text and visual feedback during a cast.
*Stackable bait and stackable fish -- 10 per stack.
*Fishing line and hook to be used on your fishing rod if your line snaps.

Chances of a Catch:
*Every 3 ranks in survival +1% chance.
*Rain gives +10%
*dusk/dawn gives a +5%
*A "good" spot gives +5% (though this is sort of random for salt water. Reeds/rocks etc are good for freshwater. There are less "good" spot's than "average" ones.

Cursed Items, they are the bane of every adventurer! Fortunately a cursed item can be cleansed by a Remove Curse spell being cast on the item OR on the person that has such an item. If the latter is the case make sure the person has put the affected item in the first slot of his inventory.

There are many types of curses, these are some of the known types:
*Polymorph when Equpped, An unfortunate soul was even turned into an Imp and killed by passing adventurers once

*Blinding Curses when an item is Equipped

*Radom Negative Item properties when an item is equipped

*An Item switches on and off and may change item properties, then lose them

*A disease or poison is inflicted when the affected item is equipped
*The item may explode when used
*The item may not function when used
*The item may inflict damage when used

*Many other types whicch are equally cursed!

There are several ways to discover if an item is cursed,
The most obvious one is equipping it. People with a high Lore or Spellcraft skill may be able to spot the curse before that happens though, for example when they first acquire the item. The difficulty class for detecting a curse depends on the cursed Item's worth. Items with high value have curses that are harder to detect. An Identify or Legend Lore spell will also assist a careful adventurer.

To get rid of curses it is highly recommended to seek out another player character capable of casting a remove curse spell on you.
It aims to answer questions such as ‘How do I get rid of the mug in my hand’, ‘How do I remove my invisibility / other wards when I can’t rest’ and other questions. I will be covering the most common buttons and functions.

Accessing the PC Tools menu is easy. You simply need to right click your character or character portrait. Then look down to the bottom of the little drop down menu.

Once you do that, a box will pop up:

This little box contains a ton of useful bits. We will go through them all in the following order:

(Don’t worry… there is a method to the madness.)

[1] Save Character
This button is handy when resets loom and you can’t rest, when you gain a level, when you finish a big trade, ect. Anything you might not want to lose due to a crash (which unfortunately happens from time to time.) Resting will also save your character of course, and either way you may select the “return to last location” option from Mystra in the Nexus.

---> When you click the button, you will see a message pop up wherever you have it set to show server messages (in my case the combat log box, separate from all the chat):

[2] Remove Effects
This button is useful, again if you cannot rest. Want to remove that invisibility spell that lasts forever? Drop your wards now that you are safe and sound? Remove the flashy spells some crazy wizard cast on you before you have a seizure? ( Haha, okay so that last one might be just me…) Simply click this button, and poof! No more spell effects. More efficient than Dispelling, and guaranteed to remove every spell effect, visual or not, cast on you, regardless of whether or not you cast them or someone else.

[3] Toggle AFK
AFK-Away From Keyboard. Use this button if you are going to be away for a minute or two. It also is a good idea to have it up so people aren’t worried you are in an in-character coma or something.

The server has a script that stops pick pockets from attacking AFK people… BUT: It is blatant meta-gaming to try to use this to thwart thieves. However if you come back to the computer and see something seeming out of place, just smile and check your server messages… because Our Developers have a strong sense of poetic justice… hehehe.

---> Clicking the button simply puts A ‘sign’ of sorts over your character’s head that reads in big yellow letters: AFK.

The staff kindly asks if the server is near full or full, that if you intend to be AFK for more than five minutes or so, that you log out. Not putting the AFK tag up simply to avoid having to log out and back in is bad form. Yes I know sometimes it is annoying to click Connect a dozen or more times, but the price of a popular server is that sometimes you have to wait in line. Patience is a virtue that rewards, and everyone has to do it at some point or another.

[4] Check Time
This button works as instructed, it reports the time.

[5] Dice Rolls
This ‘button’ expands into a larger menu, but it is negated by the DMFI button discussed here:
Subject: MUM'S GUIDES: DMFI Buttons

[6] Pitch Tent
This button does just what it says it does. It makes a tent, strictly for in-character roleplay purposes. Sometimes characters and familiars / companions/summons can get ‘stuck’ in tents. This can be fixed by removing the tent. This can be done the same way as removing a camp fire, which we will discuss shortly.

[7] Build Campfire
Again, like the tent, this creates a campfire. Nifty thing about campfires are the fact that they can be used to dispose of unwanted items. Everyone knows that littering causes lag, and if you didn’t, you do now. Much like the trash barrels and larger campfires, but with the added bonus that it can be where you are, so if you are nowhere near a means to dispose of junk, and encumbered… you can do this on the spot.

Now on to how to use the campfire that you just made, please refer to the following image as we go along (note… there is a -bit- of flexibility to these steps):

1) Build your fire

2) Open your inventory

3) ‘Use’ your fire (Left click on it. This will bring up a container box)

4) Select the junk from your inventory (in this case some renamed, plain darts)

5) Add them to the campfire inventory box

6) Close the campfire (Note… if you change your mind, items can still be retrieved before you remove the fire. We will cover Removing soon.)

7) Select the Miscellaneous ‘button’ (see info on this button for how to remove your fire… keep reading)

[8] Miscellaneous
This ‘Button’ drops down another set of options. The most important button (in my opinion anyway) is the Remove button, marked with a gold dot. Another useful button is the Help ‘button’ which will bring up some basic info. In truth the rest of the buttons I have never used, but plan on learning so that this Guide is complete.

Now, when you click the remove button… You will see the following where you have combat / server messages set to show up:

Your cursor will also change. You may then click on your tent from button 6:

This message will appear in your chat dialogue and be in the form of an emote. Your tent will disappear at the end of the animation.
Same principle applies with your campfire. The only difference being that when you remove the campfire, you get this message:

Once you have removed the campfire, anything in it is gone. Permanently. It is a good idea to not leave a dozen campfires burning, for more than just keeping Smokey the Dire Bear happy. Too many objects on the ground, placables and what not, loot bags and junk items all add to lag.

[9] Emotes
This is possibly the most complex and varied aspect of the PC tools. I recommend taking time to go through the various emotes and find ones that suit you, remember where they are. One of the most popular, aside from the sitting emote, and the lying down emote, is probably the ‘Dance Classy’ emote.

So when you click the ‘button’ it drops down an extensive menu, that is about three ‘pages’ long. You may go through these ‘pages’ by scrolling either with the scroll bar on the side or your mouse’s scroll wheel. There are some notable buttons that remain at the bottom at all times. Two are actual buttons, and two ‘bubble toggles’. In order from Left to Right:

1) Cease! This will stop -any- of the emotes / animations found on the Emotes tab.

2) One-Shot and Looping togglesNot every single emote will use these two toggles, such as the sitting one. They are used to determine how long the animation runs. For instance if you select Dance Classy, then select Looping, once you hit the Emote! Button… your character will keep dancing until you move your character, or click the Cease! Button.Likewise, if you select the One-Shot option, once the animation has run one time, your character will stop and just stand there like normal.

3) Emote! This button, once you have selected your emote by clicking the bubble next to what you want, and decided whether or not you wish it to be looping or not, will begin the animation.

VFX Props Selection
This is one of the most asked about sections. It is the last ‘page’ at the ‘bottom’ of the Emotes tab/button. It is the only subsection whose title bar is also a button. While the tab is mostly self explanatory, one of the most frequent questions that Dungeon Masters and seasoned players alike get asked is: How do I get rid of the prop?

Well, step one is to pick your prop and do what you want with it as far as RP.

[1] You may use these in conjunction with emotes. When you are done with it, simply click the tab header

[2] and the item disappears from your hand.

Again, I invite everyone to get the feel for the Emotes section of the PC Tools by using them, experimenting with various combinations to come up with various useful in-character animations. Such as grave digging or drunken dancing.

This covers the very basic buttons on the PC Tools. If anyone has info on other buttons that work and how to use them, please feel free to PM me so I may add to the Guide. If there are other ‘broken’ or ‘obsolete’ buttons, let me know so I can make note of it. If there are further questions, or I missed something important, please send me a PM so I can expand on it, and help you.

An online continuously run D&D Campaign:
Baldur's Gate: The Sword Coast Chronicles is a privately run continuous D&D campaign with Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) as its gaming platform. Everybody that wishes to be part of a living, breathing, and evolving Forgotten Realms setting is welcome to join in, provided that they respect our community rules for a good shared online experience. By definition the continuous campaign world is shaped by the players but that does not mean that non-playable characters have no influence in it.

The extent of player influence is best explored by relating it to our game world rule explaining that player characters count as half their actual level in so far as they interact with the setting. The question therefore is, what influence can a group of level 15 players have on the setting?

The answer depends on the roleplay, the die rolls, and the commitment of the players behind the characters. "Is it likely that you will kill a deity or replace Lord Ao as overlord of the Gods?" It isn't, which probably isn't a surprise. "Does that mean it has been ruled out in advance?" No, the Dungeon Master Team and player base respond to what happens in the campaign, we do not determine what shall happen in advance. The difference is that some things carry with them a lot of momentum and therefore need a lot of counter-momentum to stop, and even more to turn them around. However, each little push against the current alters where the apple can fall, so that even little things impact the continuous campaign.

The on-going development process:
The overall goal of BG:TSCC is to provide a Neverwinter Nights 2 Persistent World that everyone can play on and enjoy. From the hardened role-player to the hardened monster slayer, we welcome everyone. All that we ask is that you be kind to those around you, don't argue with other players, and please don't complain needlessly.

BG:TSCC is currently made up of around 21 staff members. This includes the Developer’s, Builders and the Dungeon Masters. Each of them working for free in their spare time because of their love of Neverwinter Nights 2 and the Forgotten Realms. A lot of people wonder why the server is still in 'Beta' state, and when it will be 'final'. When we first started this place we had to decide whether to keep it closed until it was done, or to release it all and let people play on it as we built it. We chose to the latter:
*1. So that people who wanted to play now could.
*2. So that we could be more dynamic in our reaction to the issues uncovered when building an online world.
As we grow we will continue to add more areas, better monsters (this could be monster difficulty, spawn rate, spawn groups, Challenge Rating flow, etc.), new features, quests and more. So remember that what you see is not necessarily how things will be in the end.
*Baldur's Gate has been in Beta for the better part of 7 years and will stay that way to reflect that a Persistent World can never become "complete".

The server is best characterized by calling it a low to medium magic world that stays very close to the power-levels seen in 'Baldur's Gate I: The Sword Coast Chronicles' and early 'Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn', excluding the Throne of Bhaal expansion. Despite the potential for combat and action we are a roleplaying server. It is expected of players to stay in character wherever they can.

Development Quality Control & Testing:
To make sure of the quality of new additions there is a special Quality Control Tester team. This team is assisted by Dungeon Masters and tries to break and find issues with new feats, classes, spells and areas for example.

These testers are players who have been asked if they want to help us, or who have volunteered their time.

While they are assisted by the Dungeon Master team and have access to all manner of testables they do not receive any permanent benefits for it. In fact, they are required to use test characters and the tested content is to be removed afterwards. This avoids the appearance of favoritism, which is a type of behavior we oppose very much!

The design philosophy that the staff of the server follow can be summarized like this:
* "To do whatever works to make the server a nicer place to play"

This translates into keeping an eye on (some of) the following factors to develop and balance the environment.

* How does monster power compare against player characters of that challenge rating? Make sure they remain a proper challenge to keep the game fun.
*Make sure items are balanced in the sense that they don't accumulate into a huge advantage which robs the environment of any challenge it might offer at that challenge rating.
*Make sure no class or multi-class combination is overpowered in the sense that it would rob the environment of any challenge it might offer at that challenge rating.
*Add new feats, spells and classes to allow players as much freedom as possible to develop their character.
*Add new monsters, areas, quests and systems to deepen the gameplay and keep players on their toes.
*Assist the DM's as much as possible in keeping a persistent, interactive environment in which actions have consequences. Anything is possible.
*Listen to player feedback and ideas for things to change and add or prioritize.
*Have fun doing it, since we're only volunteers.

Regarding a dispute with Kaedrin,
As of sometime late 2012 / beginning 2013 BGTSCC became the unwilling party in a troubled relationship with Kaedrin, author of Kaedrin's PRC. During the week between Christmas and New Year 2012 the author licensed his new works and forbade us to use those. He moreover insisted that we not use content he had previously made freely available on various sites. At that time much effort had already been spent incorporating those freely released works. Because of that the server's staff refused to comply, something which following the letter and spirit of copyright law we were entitled to decide.

This has unfortunately led to a series of internet tantrums on his website, and various forums. The author also continues to demand we not use the works he has freely published. The details of this can be found here: See the posts on NWN2 DB

In line with our previous statements on the matter we continue to wish Kaedrin well and hold no malice against him. We are grateful for the contributions he has made to the NWN2 community. If you have any questions or problems relating to content that is on our server we ask that you direct you questions to the staff and not bother Kaedrin with them. He cannot be assumed to be aware BGTSCC's many custom changes, nor would he presumably appreciate being asked.

Rasael:

The Dungeon Master Team (DM's) are responsible for narrative flow, creating the scenario and setting in which the game takes place.

They maintain the roleplay pace and provide dynamic feedback. In storyteller role, a Dungeon Master is responsible for describing the events of the D&D game session and making rulings about game situations and effects based on the decisions made by the players.

A Dungeon Master serves as the arbiter of the rules, both in teaching the rules to the players and in enforcing them. The rules provide game mechanics for resolving the outcome of events, including how the player's characters interact with the game world.

The Dungeon Master Team:
The DM team consists of anonymous individuals that leave their player accounts behind when they ascend to their new glorious office. (see picture *wink wink*) They are presumed to be neutral and incidents of favoritism or other absues of power are dealt with by the DM Team Leader and the staff.

Dungeon Masters will regularly throw events for players and help them play out their character. These events may be requested in advance or spontaneously held. The emphasis of DM activity is to faciliate and enhance player generated roleplay. The Dungeon Masters are not charged with directing roleplay or generating it for the players. As a consequence it is the actions of players which will affect the world. Player responses, solutions and in-action shape the persistent world.

This dimension of player influence over the game world is vast. Player characters have historically possessed political offices, earned noble titles, sacked villages and citadels, and determined the outcome of at least two major wars.

Examples are the Amn-Baldur's Gate Conflict of 1347-48 DR, the Illithilich Conflict of S'shamath in 1348 DR, as well as the later Black Orc conlict in 1349 DR. This lattter conlict resulted in the sack of Triel and the reestablishment of a strong Zhentarim presence based in Darkhold. These wars involved battles as well as infiltration, subterfuge, the planning of strategy and diplomacy. All lead and determined by player initiative.

Any player can thus shape the future of the server, provided he roleplays to that end and is committed to his goal. For more on player influence please see the Server's Timeline.

How DM's are recruited:
New DM's are chosen by the team itself, players can typhically apply by sending an application to the DM Team group via private message. In rare cases they may also be invited.

A brief supplication gives you a vision that hints at how dangerous the immediate future is likely to be. Based on an assessment of the caster's immediate surroundings and like path of travel, the caster receives one of three visions:

:
-Safety, the caster is in no immediate danger in this area.
-Peril, the caster will face challenges typhical of an adventure but nothing overhwelming.
-Great danger, the caster's life is at grave risk in this area.

The base chance for receiving an accurate reply is 70% + 1% per casterlevel, to a maximum of 90%.

If the roll fails, you get one of the two other results, determined randomly. You don't necessarily know that you failed because the roll is made secretly. Choosing which vision is correct takes some educated guesswork on the part of the caster, who could assess his previous experience in an area and his own equipment as well as spells memorized.

The exact form that an omen of peril takes depends on whether the caster worships a specific deity, venerates nature as a druid or simply upholds abstract principles. A druid might see a white dove for safety, a dark cloud obscuring the sun for peril and a forest fire for great danger.

Unlike the more powerful augury, an omen of peril doesn't respond to a specific question. It only indicates the level of danger likely in the current area.
